Story & Experience

I am a bit late with my contribution but it is of beach erosion in an area known as Shoalwater Beach near Rockingham in Western Australia. As sea level rises and storm surges become more powerful, the coast line is retreating inland and as it does so, it takes coastal vegetation and human structures with it. This process is speeding up as humans fail to deal with the problem of climate change and global warming. The coast becomes a damaged place and the Radical Joy bird that is at the base of the retreating sand dune and walkway was made from the remains of a blue thong (flip flop) and bits of cuttlefish that had washed up during the last storm. The cuttlefish illustrates the fragility of the coast and the thong the human pollution that is the cause of the problem.
