Polluted water on the keys

Story & Experience

Regennas

Location: my dock—the shoreline on either side & the water in the canal – The waters & shoreline have been increasingly harmed by “civilization” & now the [BP spill] oil invasion looms in our very backyard.

Act of Beauty: swimming, diving, kayaking in the water. Making a stick bird with a coconut head & taking it for a ride on the water.

Reflections of participants: Charlotte: Life is teaming about us. Despite the trashing of the earth, it goes on. I may have contributed to the debris I gathered and I will be more mindful of where my garbage and waste ends its path. I will steward the empty lots next to my property, as they are a constant source of beauty to me.

Each of my five participants had noticed changes over the years in the quality of the water with the steady population growth and surge of tourism in the Keys and were concerned about groundwater contamination, dwindling fish and coral and wetlands pollution diminishing natural habitat. During our Nature walk, however, each person found a wonderful creature. Some beautiful, hidden treasure ranging from a tiny blue striped fish no one could identify to a pair of green-crested birds flying in unison. The beauty of nature inspired our act of beauty (see pictures).
