Story & Experience

Shea

Attached is my radical joy bird near the old mining site in Crested Butte, Colorado. The bird is made of old coal and found litter from the site of the Big Mine site that operated in CB until the late 1950s. The land is slowly recovering, but you can see the cola pile silhouette in front of Mt. Crested Butte in the background. There is added significance to this as for the past 37 years our community has been fighting a proposed large molybdenum mine just outside our town limits. This bird signifies our resolve to honor our damaged yet recovering lands, and prevent even worse debacles from happening here.
