Story & Experience
Cleaned up litter at a campfire/picnicking area in the Catalina Mountains. My site was a clearing in a pine forest on top of the Catalina Mountains which are part of the Coronado National Forest. The mountains are just north of Tucson, about an hour’s drive from midtown. This is an area used for picnicking and has a rock campfire surrounded by a large sooty space. After I made and photographed my RadJoy bird, I spent some time cleaning up litter, mostly small pieces: cigarette butts, hard plastic, soft plastic, bottle caps, soda tabs, aluminum foil, broken glass, paper, newspaper; also a sock, a tennis ball, two blackened bananas, half an orange rind, and, in a nearby gulch, many clumps of toilet paper. What I didn’t put in my garbage bag: an ax head and a charred skillet. I can’t say that I felt celebratory, but I did feel better afterwards. Throughout the time that I was there I occasionally heard the sweet fluting song of a Hermit Thrush.
