The Woods I grew up with

Story & Experience

We set off across a grassy field to enter the forest. There were three of us and one fit snugly on my mother’s back in a pack. We noticed a dry creek bed as we entered the forest. The evening light was just beginning to come through the leaves in a beautiful golden hew. We each spent time with the land and then came back together to share. My mother felt a kinship with the earth, she felt the light change and smiled with the ease and beauty the natural world so easily shared with her. I felt this place communicate its deep, deep gratitude for being recognized.

Why this Place?
Great Barrington, MA
I grew up visiting the woods behind my house for solace, play, inspiration and adventure. The trees are lovely old oak and maple trees. Last year, while home visiting my parents we noticed a logging operation beginning next door. Our hearts broke— although never “our trees” (or anyone’s for that matter) we felt so sad. We visited the specific site to honor the forest we love.
Act of Beauty
The bird we created was already partially in place and we both saw it. A bird in flight with an open mouth.
