The cornfield next-door

Story & Experience

The corn has been planted so it took some effort to walk through and I only went partway. The photo is of the roots of last year‘s corn plants. They are a Council of Elders.
I had just a little time today for this. when I got there.. I squatted down to see the orderly rows of corn, beautiful in their own way. I saw how very dry the Earth is.

and I prayed for the elders to promote the most good for the most people. I have little control over the situation; I am putting my trust in something bigger than myself.

Why this Place?

Mansfield, Connecticut

This is the field of a larger property, across the street from me, bordered by old woods and a pond, housing frogs. For the last few years, it has been for sale for about nine times its original price for the possibility of housing development. Although corn farming is generally pretty toxic it is a beautiful place. It illustrates for me the tension between the need for farmland, the need for housing, and the disposable attitude we have towards land.

Act of Beauty

I simply looked for what was beautiful to me. The intricacy of the roots of last year‘s corn seems magical. I dug some up, shaking off the old dry dirt, putting them in a circle with one another.
