Story & Experience

I made this trip to bear witness and be with dear friends traumatized by the loss and disappearance of loved ones. I walked slowly around the fountain, absorbing each image and reading all the messages. All around was the typical hum of the city— traffic and voices—yet life did not feel normal at all.

Why this Place?

Dizengoff Square in Tel Aviv, Israel

An iconic public space built in 1934 and named for Meir Dizengoff, the first mayor of Tel Aviv. The entire surrounding of the fountain is covered in photos, messages and offerings to honor and pray for the 1,200 Israelis killed by Hamas (and wounding more than 3,300) on October 7 with 250 hostages taken to Gaza, including foreign nationals.

Act of Beauty

I gathered dainty blossoms from bushes in the neighborhood as I returned to the fountain a second day. Picking a random, rare space between the offerings, I created this white-eyed, red-winged RadJoy bird to nestle among the beautiful faces of these people now gone or suffering at the hands of their captors. The innocents in Gaza were also in my heart as I arranged the colors, shapes and textures as a channel for my prayers.
