Local quarry feeding city ring road development

Story & Experience

Many local people described how torn they feel, between the employment provided by the quarry for locals, and the noise, disturbance, danger and damage caused by the quarry and its traffic. It disturbs the bird song, causes concern for other road users, as well as the permanent hilltop removal that is happening hidden in a narrow valley at the quarry location itself. It is changing the world forever.

As the RadJoy flag was placed on the ground, a big truck rumbled past, timely in its arrival. It felt as though the bird was being placed as an act of defiance, to say somehow ‘this will pass, and the bird song will continue, once you’re gone’. Eventually the sound of the truck faded away, and the sound of birds calling returned.

The moment felt necessary to those present. It is undoubtably challenging to live near a quarry, to be so badly affected. Yet those present felt a hope that they will outlast the quarry, as will the birds.

Why this Place?

Lockerbie, Scotland

This lime stone quarry has been providing rubble for building and engineering projects in the north of England and south of Scotland. Its rural location is an ugly scar upon an otherwise green landscape. Over the last three years in particular, huge amounts of rock have been blasted out of the land, and then driven by quarry traffic along tiny, ancient tracks and by-ways, to the major roads. It is then used to create a new ring round around a nearby city.

Act of Beauty

The RadJoy flag was placed on a shingled patch of land, undoubtably also shipped in from another location somewhere, as no shingle exists her locally. The stones were pushed aside to reveal a darker, sunshine shape, and also used to weigh the flag down, that wanted to flap away.
