While we are fortunate to live very close to the Blue Mountains National Park, it is also the case that remote areas attract illegal rubbish dumpers. We had observed a dumped, burnt-out car body in the bush for a couple of months before it was removed by the authorities. For our Earth Exchange we decided to revisit that site and see what remained. With Jill Albrecht and granddaughter Lyra Albrecht (aged 9) I figured we could make a type of dangerous, toxic beauty out of what remained. The site was marked out by police tape and a sign that warned of the toxicity. Despite the grey day and the occasional rain shower, we worked for a short time to produce a RadJoy bird with feathers made from melted wheels, a body of burnt tools, plastic and other bits of detritus. From the desolation arose the Hammer Head Bird of hard knocks. Lyra was able to see that, despite the ‘dump’, a better future for this site was possible.
