We ourselves were caught in a massive unexpected June storm and sheltered at a nearby outdoor cafe. There, Laura talked about her own personal wounded places. After the storm we sheltered under a particularly wide and generous tree—admiring its beauty and strength. I read a bit from a tree poem I performed at an event about a year ago—about a childhood tree that haunted my brother and I. During our childhood we both feared and admired it. Laura talked about the beauty of nature that needs to be more and more appreciated. She has an extensive project on the internet documenting almost all the parks of Berlin called Park Project Berlin. We sat there after the long storm and used branches that had fallen from the trees during the storm to make our bird.

Why this Place?
Berlin, Germany
We selected a forest of a Prussian castle in north Berlin. There have been articles in Germany recently about forests in historic Parks and Gardens struggling with climate change—which creates droughts for roots and fallen trees from greater storms. Some of these gardens had lost half their trees.
Act of Beauty
As we made our bird, passersby came over to admire and view it. That is how the future is built—from the residue of the past—the damage transformed to something beautiful and resilient. There was an interesting quiet after the storm next to this palace left over from the Prussian time and then the communist German Democratic Republic. Weathering the future.
