Ever Evolving

Story & Experience

Autumn and I met at an area of the park where there is a natural stream that channels into cement foundations and a tunnel. It once was very piled up with garbage and tree debris. While things have been cleaned up, we still see erosion on the banks and damage to the land. We contemplated what the area looked like 100 or more years ago. And we imagined 100 or more years in the future. We talked about how everything is ever evolving, and in many ways we have no control over it. Nature is always working with what is handed to her and no matter what, she is always resilient. What we see is only on the surface, but nature goes much deeper. That depth can hopefully bring healing even if humans act in harmful ways.

Why this Place?
Wyman Park Dell, Baltimore, MD
We have consistently been going to this location for every Earth Exchange. Although some improvements have been made to the park over the years, since it is in an urban setting, there are still issues with erosion, pollution, and invasive plants and insects.
Act of Beauty
As we do every year, we gathered materials from the land—both plant matter and garbage strewn around—to create the RadJoy bird. We think about each part of the bird and look for objects that can be used. Sometimes the object is just right, and other times we have to search a bit longer. The bird evolves as we place one thing and another to make the shape. Then there is an “ah ha” moment when we both know it is right and completed.
