From the very start we’ve said, You do these practices of finding and making beauty at hurt places for the Earth, not for credit, posterity, or approval. Yet, there many people still worry. They think, “Maybe I won’t do it right.”

When the creators of RadJoy had our very first meeting in 2009, we talked about how we would proceed with these practices and philosophy we were developing. Would we have trainings? Would we certify people to take others to hurt places and lead exercises and ceremonies there?

We agreed that we wanted this work to be as open-ended and flexible as possible, so that it would be adaptable and relevant to all kinds of people, regardless of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, or occupation.

We meant it. We do this work for the Earth, not for humans. And the Earth will not judge your attention and gift.

Here are just a few examples of how you might do the RadJoy Practice:

1.     You take your children to a place that’s been deforested, overrun with invasive plants, or littered and ask them to explore it.

2.     When you see a dead mouse or bird on the ground, you move it to a safe place and lay a flower on its body.

3.     Looking into the night sky, you feel both awe for the cosmos and sadness for the light pollution and air traffic. You accept both feelings.

4.     Walking on a city sidewalk, you place your hand briefly on a dying tree.

The possibilities are endless. They are as vast and adaptable as you and the world you move through.
