Radical Joy for Hard Times welcomed Hawaii-born artist Jana Ireijo to the Earth Exchange Cafe to share her unique approach through her art to reconciling grief for what is being lost in the natural world while finding beauty, resilience, and joy in what remains.

Jana’s Vanishing Murals creates temporary eco-themed murals that physically deteriorate over time, symbolizing the fragility of ecosystems and endangered species. Using foraged wildfire charcoal, local waters, natural pigments and other local materials gathered where the art is created, Jana’s work blends environmental activism and art to spark awareness about climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental justice — before returning to the earth with the elements.
